Around the waist
Are you making a fashion statement or a functional gesture?
I’ve always been a fan of tying knitwear or shirts around the waist. Originally, it was purely practical, a layer would be removed and casually knotted around the waist with no other intention other than to cool off. This however has quietly evolved into something more intentional over the past year, maybe still a practical solution for some, but a considered styling choice for others.
I’ve seen knitwear tied over knitwear, tops looped over tops with no expectation of being used for warmth. A styling move that I love, less about functional and more about adding interest to an outfit (after all, no one is truly wearing a jumper over another jumper?).
The below images are from the Ralph Lauren fall 2026 menswear, I love how the purple coat adds volume and interest to the 1st look, the denim shirt adds a different texture to the outfit and the green and pink jumpers adds a bright pop of colour.
I also love how Kallmeyer styled their pieces for their Spring 2026 show, tying the matching top around the waist and another model wearing two colour ways of a stripe top.
Sometimes costs/jackets can be bulky and not so practical for everyday life, but I quite liked my blazer around my waist here, a warm autumn look from October last year.
Here are some of my looks from the past years, most of the time unintentionally adding interest without even noticing I was, and if I’m being honest sometimes I used it to hide the mum tum - what a hack!
Whether you’re making a deliberate fashion statement or a functional gesture, I for one love it and will continue to do this.
